Welcome to the exciting world of chiropractic

You are joining many of your neighbors who have discovered the benefits of chiropractic care. You may wonder, "What is chiropractic for?" Many people experience chiropractic as a natural, drug-free way to get healthy. For example, a little boy who no longer suffers from ear infections may tell you: "Chiropractic is for my ears." A young woman may tell you: "Chiropractic is for my menstrual problems." Others may tell you that chiropractic is for digestive problems, asthma, back or neck pain, colds, headache, sciatica, neurological problems, colic, bed-wetting and many more conditions to which the flesh is heir.

However, it won't be only talk of disease. People also visit their chiropractor for more energy, for improved sports performance, for feeling more alive, for better resistance to disease, and to help ensure drug-free lives for themselves and their families.

What do chiropractors do? Chiropractors remove a serious interference in your life and health -vertebral subluxations – that prevent you from functioning at your best. Free of vertebral subluxations, you are more balanced with less stress on your nervous system and body structure. Free of vertebral subluxations, you can better tune in to your inner resources of life, health and healing.

Nerves

  • Make possible all movement
  • Transmit all sensations to the brain
  • Form the five senses
  • Help to maintain your body temperature
  • Make swallowing possible
  • Make your bowels move
  • Control your liver, lungs, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, and kidneys
  • And all the rest of the body's many systems and functions

15 Warnings Signs of an Unhealthy Spine

  1. Your heels wear out unevenly. This can be due to uneven leg length or stress along the length of the spine.
  2. You can't take a satisfying deep breath. Breath, health, spinal health and energy are interrelated.
  3. Your jaw "clicks". This can be caused by neck or hip subluxations.
  4. You have to "crack" your neck, back or other joints a lot. This can be caused by areas of your spine that are locked or jammed.
  5. You can't twist or turn your head or hips to either side, easily and equally – reduced range of motion.
  6. You are often fatigued. An unbalanced spine drains your energy.
  7. You have poor concentration. Subluxations affect brain health.
  8. You have low resistance to disease. Subluxations affect your neuro-endocrine system, which plays an important role in your resistance to disease and your ability to fight infection.
  9. Your foot flares out when walking. This test is easy as long as you don't cheat. Merely look at your feet as you walk. Do they both point forward, or does one foot appear to flare outward or inward? Do both? Foot flare may be a sign of a problem in the lower spine or hips, or meningeal stress in the upper neck or base of the brain.
  10. One leg appears shorter than the other does. Keep your shoes on, and lie down. Have someone stand behind you, look down at your feet, and gently push your heels toward your head. Compare where the heels meet the shoes. One foot (often the right) may appear anywhere from 1/8" to 1" shorter than the other.
  11. You have poor posture. Stand on two bathroom scales. The weight distribution should be about the same over each foot. If it is not, that is a good sign that your spine, hips or head are off-center.
  12. You have headaches, back aches, sore or tender spots in muscles or joints.
  13. You have a constant stressful feeling and tension especially in muscles and joints. Muscles are affected by subluxations.
  14. You feel stiffness in your back and neck. Stiffness may be a sign of subluxation damage.
  15. You just don't feel right, you are in general poor health. Subluxations can also affect your overall health.

Every science of healing has what is known as an "avenue of approach". For example, in the field of medicine, a hypodermic needle injects drugs through the skin; a pill is swallowed and goes into the stomach. There need not be anything wrong with the skin or the stomach. They are the "avenues" through which the drugs gain access to the body.

For the doctor of chiropractic, "the avenue of approach" is primarily the SPINE because it houses and protects the spinal cord, the "switchboard" of the nervous system, through which nerves pass from the brain to different parts of body. The nerves leave the spinal cord through openings between moveable spinal bones called vertebrae. When these vertebrae become involved in a VSC (Vertebral Subluxation Complex) there may be interference with the normal activity of the nerves. This interference or irritation can disturb function throughout the body and effect many illnesses. The conditions mentioned below are just a few of the many which may be associated with the nerves exiting the spinal column:

Back Pain
Neck Pain
Headaches
Hip Pain
Knee Pain
Ankle Pain
Scoliosis
Numbness
Painful Joints
Nervousness

What does a subluxation do to me?

The 5 components of the VSC:
  1. Joint Damage (Kinesiopathology)
    • Vertebrae out of proper alignment
    • Increased stress on joints, discs and ligaments
    • "Locked" jammed joints
    • "Clicking " or too much movement in joints
    • Pain
    • Reduced range of motion
    • Loss of balance and posture
    • Shoulders, hips, knees, feet compensate for postural imbalance
    • Loss of energy, fatigue
  2. Nerve Damage (Neuropathology)
    • Nerves compressed, stretched or "pinched"
    • Nerves function abnormally which can lead to:
    • Altered internal organ function
    • Pain
    • Attention deficit disorders, addictive behavior, psychosis and other conditions.
  3. Tissue Damage (Histopathology)
    • Abnormal pressures on joints and nearby "soft" tissues
    • Many areas become tender and painful, especially to touch.
    • "Hot" spots and trigger points
    • Unnatural wear and tear causes arthritic changes to the joints and nearby tissues
  4. Muscle Damage (Myopathology)
    • Muscles become tense
    • Spastic
    • Always tight
    • Muscles weaken
    • Cartilage, ligaments, and tendons are weakened
    • Pain
    • Postural distortions
  5. Health Damage (Pathophysiology)
    • Dis-ease (lack of wholeness or health)
    • Accelerated aging
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Lessened ability to respond to physical and emotional stress
    • Lowered resistance to disease
    • Joint degeneration, bone deformation, disc destruction
    • Loss of height
    • Inability to "hold" adjustment for a long period of time

Subluxations can also affect…

Emotional health. A subluxation can cause wide-ranging emotional effects.

Trophic substances. Nerves supply muscles and other organs with nutrition. They are essential for muscle tone and organ vitality
The meninges that wraparound your brain, spinal cord and many nerves, and connect to your spine, can be distorted by a subluxation. This can affect the stability and health of your entire spinal column and nervous system. Inside the meninges flows the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is essential for proper nervous system and overall body health.

Organ health (somato-autonomic relationship). A disruption of the nerve-organ relationship has been linked to a weakened immune system, blood pressure irregularities, disturbed kidney function and other conditions.

Immune system function. Nerve fibers go into virtually every organ of the immune system and form direct contacts with the immune system cells…if you took the nerves away from the spleen or the lymph nodes, you virtually stopped immune responses in their tracks. Now there is overwhelming evidence that hormones and neurotransmitters can influence the activities of the immune system, and that products of the immune system can influence the brain.

Levels of Chiropractic Care

Level 1 – Intensive Spinal Correction
  • Your chronic (long-standing), or acute (recent) subluxations have damaged your vertebrae, joints, nerves, discs, muscles, meninges, tendons and ligaments.
  • Your spine is weak and unstable and your adjustments hold briefly and incompletely.
  • You may have advanced spinal degeneration.
  • Height loss, stiffness, tightness, tension and constant physical or emotional pain is common at this level, as is dullness and premature aging.
  • Your posture is off-center; your spine is unbalanced.
  • Your energy is low, your breath is shallow, and your ability to adapt to life's stresses is compromised.
  • You have less sensitivity to your physical and psychological needs.
  • You may have many symptoms – a sign that your body is struggling to heal.

Initially you may need many adjustments – every time you come in for a spinal checkup. The fibrosis (scar tissue) around your joints and nerves, and the stress damage of your ligaments, tendons, and muscles due to years of chronic subluxations, makes it difficult for your spine to hold its adjustments.

Level 2 – Reconstructive/Corrective or Spinal Healing
  • Your spine is beginning to respond to chiropractic care – you are experiencing less intense subluxation damage.
  • Height loss slows or stops, flexibility improves, as do physical and emotional overall well-being.
  • Your spine does not yet hold adjustments for long periods; consistent subluxation correction is needed for healing and stability of your vertebrae, joints, nerves, discs, muscles, meninges, tendons and ligaments.
  • Spinal degeneration has halted and may be decreasing.
  • Energies begin to flow better; your breath may be more noticeable.
  • Sensitivity to your physical and psychological needs increases.

You are starting to hold your adjustments for longer periods, but you are still subluxation-prone. Your subluxation pattern may shift and different areas may need to be adjusted on each visit. Continued corrective care helps your vertebrae, nerves, discs, muscles, tendons, ligaments and other structures strengthen and heal.

Level 3 – Health Enhancement
  • Your spinal column is releasing its chronic vertebral subluxation damage.
  • Your chiropractic spinal adjustments are holding for longer periods, permitting increased healing of your spinal vertebrae, joints, nerves, discs, muscles, meninges, tendons and ligaments.
  • Spinal degeneration is reversing.
  • Your energy improves, breathing is deeper and you experience greater relaxation and better sleep.
  • As physical and psychological health and sensitivity increases, retracing, a brief expression of old physical and emotional stress in your body, may occur

Your spine is being trained to maintain its alignment and increase in flexibility and strength. By having your and your loved ones' spines checked on a periodic basis, many of the problems caused by an unhealthy spinal column can be corrected and prevented.

Level 4 – Health Optimization
  • Free from subluxation damage, your spinal column and nervous system are balanced and stable.
  • You are better able to adapt to your physical, emotional and chemical stresses.
  • Your breathing, relaxation and sleep is deep and satisfying.
  • You are more sensitive to your movement, diet and relationships to others and the world.
  • You have more energy; your body functions at a higher level of resistance to disease.
  • You are increasingly connected and sensitive; life is full of wonder, excitement and inspiration.

You visit your chiropractor for periodic spinal checkups. Although subluxations may occasionally occur, they are easily released. Your spine is flexible and moves in a fluid motion. Your vertebrae move easily, your muscles are balanced and your discs, tendons and ligaments are strong.
